Penokean Hills Farms is a cooperative of beef farmers in Bruce Mines, ON. They raise their cattle on pasture without the use of hormones or antibiotics.
They own their own abattoir which allows them to be vertically integrated. This means that they are able to control the welfare of their animals through every stage of their life. They operate on a closed loop, which means that the animals are born on the farm, grow up on the farm, and only eat food produced on the farm.
The diet for their beef consists of grazing on pasture, peas, barley and other crops that will easily grow in their climate with little intervention. The feed is their own recipe and was developed in partnership with the University of Algoma.
